They are late works that demonstrate Greene's compositional prowess as the leading British-born composer of his time, and which conclude an extensive series of English Te Deum settings begun by Purcell in 1694, with later examples by Blow, Turner and Croft. Structurally the two are very different, not only from each other but from Handel's expansive Dettingen Te Deum of 1743.
