Bryars writes ‘The orchestration is quite light throughout, so that the singing quality of the double bass can emerge. The emphasis in terms of tessitura is on the middle register, though in the closing section there is a passage in natural harmonics. Although the piece is not designed to be a virtuoso showpiece, there is a brief cadenza in which the soloist is supported at times by other solo instruments (bass clarinet, viola, cello, bass).'
(Gavin Bryars)

Composer: Gavin Bryars (1943-)

Instrumentation: Cello, Viola, Electric Guitar

Work: After the Requiem (1990)

Binding:

ISMN: 9790220133152

Size: 9.3 x 12.0 inches

Pages: 16

 Look Inside!

Description

I had written the Cadman Requiem in 1989 for the Hilliard Ensemble in memory of my friend and sound engineer Bill Cadman, who was killed in the Lockerbie air crash. His death affected me very deeply and, pending a recording of this piece, Manfred Eicher asked if I might like to develop an instrumental work from this, using the same instrumentation for accompaniment and retaining the same opening bars as part of a new ECM album. The piece is "after" the Requiem therefore in the musical sense of being based on it, in the chronological sense of following on from it, and in the spiritual sense of representing that state which remains after mourning is (technically) over. I wrote the piece in Venice in September 1990 and finished it in Oslo on the day of the recording, where I added the electric guitar of Bill Frisell. This, I felt, blended particularly well with low strings (2 violas and cello). Coincidentally, having used certain distortion effects on the guitar, we found that we were recording on the twentieth anniversary of the death of Jimi Hendrix. Within the music I use one or two modified extracts from the Cadman Requiem itself, and from its common source Invention of Tradition, for which Bill Cadman had done the sound design. The piece is dedicated to the two Bills (Cadman and Frisell).

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0900/1828/files/5ede13de0ae81329cee80ac385f2b506_f381f2a8-6a6f-4ca9-be75-6176d038ffe2.jpg?v=1772905346
bryars-fifth-book-of-madrigals-i-tatti-schott
Bryars: Fifth Book of Madrigals ("I Tatti")

Composer: Gavin Bryars (1943-)

Instrumentation: SATB Choir

Work: Fifth Book of Madrigals ("I Tatti") (2013)

Binding:

Work Language: Italian

ISMN: 9790220131561

Size: 8.3 x 11.8 inches

Pages: 72

 Look Inside!

Description

The "I Tatti" Madrigals - for mixed voices (STTTBarB)

The choice of 16th century texts, by Bronzino and Battiferri, reflects the interests of the dedicatee of these sonnets - Craig Hugh Smyth, a fine art historian and former director of the Villa I Tatti, who was a specialist in Bronzino and Pontormo. Bronzino's sonnet is a lament on the death of Pontormo, his teacher; Laura Battiferri's poem is a direct response to that of Bronzino. As I was also asked to set sonnets by Petrarca, I chose two of his closely linked sonnets, numbers 229 and 230 in the Rime Sparse. I had written a work for I Tatti some five years earlier setting Petrarca ("A qualunque animale", the first in my Fourth Book of Madrigals) and was familiar with the context. However, through correspondence with Kathryn Bosi, Music Librarian at I Tatti and, through her, Craig Smyth's family, I became increasingly aware of his unusual and quite special character.

From his undergraduate days at Princeton and indeed throughout his life, although a great scholar and writer, he was at the same time an aficionado of jazz, loving above all Louis Armstrong, being photographed with Duke Ellington, taking his children to see Thelonious Monk, listening to Ben Webster and playing the tenor saxophone himself. Indeed, he had told Kathryn Bosi that he had been proud to walk in procession at the funerals of black musicians in New Orleans. in some ways his life was almost an obverse mirror image of parts of my own - I was a professional jazz musician but found myself teaching art history for a time. Extracts from four short organ pieces were included in the play as occasional incidental music. Bryars referred to these as the Pythagorean Comma Pieces.

In January 2025, my father mentioned the idea of extending these organ works, thinking it might be nice to give them a new lease of life. On first viewing and listening, I felt they were already quite complete and wasn't sure how to expand them in a way that would feel organic. However, I began to imagine them functioning as 'preludes' to a set of 'preludes and fugues' (in the loosest sense), and decided to use that as my working template. I then worked methodically through the four, creating 'fugues' in response to Gavin's 'preludes'. in each case I took something from the preceding prelude as my starting point and wrote the piece onwards from there sometimes referring directly to the prelude, but often simply responding to it.

I also wanted the whole work to function as a coherent set of four pieces that could be played together, so I shaped my fugues to contrast with the preludes in timbre, feel, scope, speed, and so on. in doing this, I hoped to create a unified cycle in which each fugue grows naturally out of its prelude while contributing to the broader character of the set.

-Yuri Bryars
