Set in a night club in Las Vegas, Vera involves four characters whose alienation from themselves and each other leads to bizarre consequences. The cast includes two suspected IRA operatives on the lam, undercover agents and the title character, a sensationally portrayed African-American Transvestite. The cleverness of the libretto is matched by Daron Hagen's richly imagined and characterful music, by turns wild and touching. The published vocal score includes the complete compact disc "original cast recording" (with libretto) that has recently been released on the CRI label.

Composer: Daron Hagen (1961-)

Instrumentation: Piano, SATB Solos

Work: The Antient Concert, Op. 89

Binding:

Work Language: English

ISBN: 9780825862649

Size: 9.0 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

Legend has it that John McCormack and James Joyce competed in the Tenor singing competition. The first movement is in a traditional sonata allegro form that incorporates a jazzy theme. The second theme features a broadly expressive introduction and coda framing a strophic melody in the flute supported by a pulsing neo-baroque accompaniment. The first movement, Toccata, is a virtuosic rondo whose first theme is a fugue subject I wrote as a student at Juilliard during the early eighties and always wanted to have some fun with, and a jazzy little riff based on an octatonic scale. The second movement, Sarabande, is written in the spirit of Leonard Bernstein's Anniversaries and is a musical portrait of my mother. Aria began as the very first sketch for my opera Amelia; in the story, a little girl sings this music as an apostrophe to the stars. The final Medley takes a fragment of the traditional Irish ballad The Croppy Boy and subjects it to some brutal compositional chiaroscuro as it is intercut with ideas from the previous movements. I am a pianist, so I set myself specific challenges for each movement: the first highlights touch and velocity, the second voicing, the third a long singing line and pedaling, and the last dramatic shifts in color, tempo, and dynamics."

—Daron Hagen

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0900/1828/files/10c32e94eebeae6436d94294f4b5f09f_77347f90-0042-4739-847d-2f727614f2c4.jpg?v=1749483506
hagen-valse-blanche-peermusic
Hagen: Valse Blanche

Composer: Daron Hagen (1961-)

Instrumentation: Piano, Violin

Work: Valse Blanche (2014)

Binding:

UPC: 680160693726

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

"Valse Blanche: How Love Comes, Tangiers, October 1958, is a reworking of music from my opera A Woman in Morocco. By turns lubricious, chaste, tormented, and torchy, the set of variations works through the two Major themes in the opera, limning the doomed relationship between two lovers in a Tangiers pensione in October 1958. The violin takes the role of Lizzy, a young American journalist; the piano portrays Ahmed, the Moroccan Major domo of the hotel. It may, of course, be the other way around." - Daron Hagen

Composer: Daron Hagen (1961-)

Format: Vocal Score

Instrumentation: Opera

Work: Shining Brow

Binding: Spiral Bound

Work Language: English

UPC: 600313446894

Size: 8.5 x 11.0 inches

Pages: None

 PDF Preview

Description

Libretto:
Written by Paul Muldoon

Synopsis:
Shining Brow centers around the 11 tumultuous years (1903-1914) in the young career of American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.
