Description

MONOLOGUE invites the listener into a chaste and contemplative universe that has no need of overall musical architecture for support. There is no use of motivic recurrencies to suggest form, nor does anything specific herald the conclusion of the piece - as in Stockhausen's 'moment form', the music is present in every moment that our senses allow us to experience.

MONOLOGUE is an aptly chosen title, not only for a solo piece for a melodic instrument but also with a view to the specific character of this composition. Extreme and very abrupt changes mark the dynamics, but this is not perceived as a rage against something - there are no cries, no weeping, no outbursts; instead, we seem to be following someone's train of introspective thought.

The idiom is atonal, with different groups of notes being emphasized in the course of the piece. Berg sets each note down separately and precisely, and single notes are then grouped together in phrases. The figures are usually soft and chromatic; extreme intervals are avoided, while 'flatterzunge' and trills are used for coloration only. A certain number of pauses create moments of real silence that serve a tectonic purpose within the modulated flow of musical sound - notated in black on pure white they stand out even graphically as pauses that break the flow of the staff.
