It is about three minutes long and exists in two versions.

The first is as a standard solo unaccompanied work. Matters of rhythm and timing are very flexible; the indicated tempo and rhythmic groupings are only there to suggest phrase shape and overall flow. Fermatas and breath pauses should be interpreted according to the performer's instinct, to create a satisfying whole. Dynamics are similarly flexible. The initial mf is only a start point, and the player should shape volume according to their interpretive instincts.

The second uses a piano to enhance the sound of the instrument. The hornist plays into the body of the instrument to create the resonance described below. Because of the shape of the horn, they may need to turn their back on the audience, and perhaps play up into the piano lid, which will be at full stick, to reflect the sound into the strings.

The pianist controls two aspects of the instrument: First, the pedal is depressed and released, according to indications in the score. Second, selected notes (after the pedal has been depressed) are held down silently. (These are indicated in the score as stemless noteheads; they should not be held in any particular order or rhythm.) When the pedal is released, these pitches should still remain as a ghostly aura, excited by the sympathetic vibrations of the horn's sound. The pianist should follow the indications carefully for when to depress and release the pedal.

Because of the process of eliciting these "auras", this version may last a little longer than the solo. It is suggested that if possible, these two versions can be performed on the two halves of a program. This work has been an unexpected joy to write. I am grateful to Peter Nelson-King for giving me the opportunity.

Composers: Matthew Welch (1976-), Jody Rockmaker (1961-), Marilyn Shrude (1946-), Philip Carlsen (1951-), Scott L. I came to know Chase coincidentally, as the wife of the novelist Russell Banks, with whom I composed the opera Harmony. But over time, in repeated encounters with her poetry, I came to realize she is in a Major figure in the field. More importantly, the work speaks deeply to me. Chase is a practicing Buddhist, and so we share a spiritual tradition. and her poems have an ability to pierce into the essence of an experience, in the moment, that is rare and clarifying. These texts present a challenge. They are very much about the enveloping silence behind all phenomena, and as a result, it might seem that music can get in the way of their intended meaning. I can't claim to have solved this conundrum, but I have tried to find ways to dig beneath the surface, to try to extract sonic essences that reflect some of the intensity and focus of the poetry. The songs are concentrated, and I try to extract moments that count. The eight poems are presented as four pairs. I see common thematic aspects between the words in each linked set, and I've tried to retain some sort of musical element that is common to each. Finally, the work's title comes from the final poem in this set, which is also the titular one of Chase's most recent collection. Its seeming grammatical lapse is intentional. The great Soto Zen master Shunryu Suzuki spoke the line in answer to a query on the meaning of the Chinese Chan poem Sandokai. When told that in English translation it was incorrect, he stated firmly it was exactly what he meant.

Composer: Robert Carl (1954-)

Instrumentation: Electric Guitar, Electronics

Work: Splectar (2021)

Binding:

Size: 9.0 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Composer: Robert Carl (1954-)

Format: Score & Set of Parts

Instrumentation: Cello, Violin, Clarinet, Flute, Shakuhachi

Work: MA: No-sound Is Not No Sound (2024)

Binding:

ISMN: 9790600231584

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

Composer's Note:

The concept of Ma in Japanese aesthetics, and in particular music, suggests the space before and after a note sounds. As a result, the music has been composed with an eye to be as adaptable as possible to many different sorts of musicians. While a trained voice will inevitably execute certain sections of the work with more polish, a "rougher" vocal technique, it combined with real musicality, can create a particularly intimate, personal, and evocative performance. Performers with some jazz or popular music background may even be at an advantage here.

The basic material of Warm Waxing Wail was composed over one week in southern California, atop a small hill in Long Beach. Each day I composed a short one-minute piece, the entire group of which constitutes a sort of "California journal." Upon returning to New England, these pieces were spliced, overlaid, and recombined with one another, rather like the effect of passage of time on series of memories. The sustained mood throughout is dreamy, delicate, meditative, and gently passionate. - - - Robert Carl

Composer: Robert Carl (1954-)

Format: Score and Set of Parts

Instrumentation: Double Bass Ensemble

Work: Night Garden (2013)

Binding:

Size: 9.0 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

Composer's Note:

Night Garden is an essay in precise tuning for five contrabasses. Its technique is at once simple and yet demanding. Every instrument plays only natural harmonics on a single string, different for each (see chart below). The sound should be as pure and ethereal as possible, even when the music grows more agitated. As the title suggests, it should "glow" with a particular luminescence that is idiomatic to the instrument, with its capacity to make higher harmonics sound more strongly than in other strings.

The work begins with a series of expansive chords that explore the harmonic possibilities. It then goes through three "variants" (indicated by double barlines)---a spacious, pointillist melody that begins with unisons to which is added increasing harmonization; a more contrapuntal passage with widely arcing lines; a "harmonic mensuration canon", the most formalistic gesture of the piece; and finally a brief chorale-coda.

Because all the notes in the piece are natural harmonics, they have not been specially notated as such---to have done so would have created problems with the conflict between the use of the open diamond and the demands of "black-note" rhythmic values.
