I found a display of a flute carved from the tusk of a woolly mammoth. I thought of longevity of musicians on this planet and the ubiquitous nature of the flute. Not only is it an instrument that has been with us for at least 35,000 years, but also its presence is found in just about every culture in our world. The analog electronic sounds were created at the Electronic Music Center of Columbia University as well as computer generated layers using MIDI and Max generated sounds.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA single movement sonatina, the work takes on a stream-of- conscious development of the thematic ideas stated by the solo guitar in its exposition. These ideas are fragmented, expanded and re-combined in a counterpoint between the guitar and the interactive Max application. The work ends with a return to solo guitar in a more relaxed, expansive and transformed recapitulation. At times the voice leads the saxophone and at other times the reverse. Together they walk through a musical landscape conjured by the computer arriving at a collective improvisation based on the words and phrases of the poem in it's original Spanish.
