Throughout this piece, three musical ideas are used: a strange, unaccompanied melody, a relaxed counterpoint typical of Renaissance choral music, and a more animated style of music, which I think of as a toccata or fanfare. Canzona begins with a slow fugue on the strange melody, starting with a solo baritone saxophone and gradually introducing more voices. After this, a series of call and response phrases introduce the choral-style music, building to a brief appearance of the toccata idea. Throughout the piece, these ingredients are recombined and developed until they all come crashing together in an intense conclusion.

Murphy Songlines. Songlines (also called Dreaming Tracks) are routes Australian Aborigines believe were taken by the spirit ancestors who called creation into existence, giving each mountain, river, plant and animal its name as they traversed the earth and sky. These tracks are not preserved by markings or maps, but in songs that when recited guide the singer as they rename each feature of the land, the song and the journey progressing together. While The Songlines is primarily a travelogue recounting the author's experience in remote parts of Australia, what makes it such a brilliant book is the way Chatwin often diverges from the topic to speculate on man's nomadic past, the nature of restlessness and the poetry and universal appeal of ancient animist beliefs. The idea of the Songlines themselves is deeply moving, but Chatwin's wider web of historical and cultural connections makes this faraway tradition seem very near.

The form of my Songlines echoes this contemplative, free-flowing narrative. It is in a single continuous movement that seamlessly transitions from a simple melody into various diverging musical ideas. Everything in the work (from the lyrical, intense opening to the light, dancing middle section and the wild, energetic music at the end) somehow comes from the melody heard at the beginning. As in the Songlines of the Aborigines, this song can be thought of as a map, guiding the music as it traverses different landscapes.

Composer: Michael Ippolito (1985-)

Format: Score & Set of Parts

Instrumentation: String Quartet (Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello)

Work: Smoke Rings (2015)

Binding:

Size: 12.2 x 8.9 inches

Pages: None

Description

Smoke Rings is about wandering thoughts and idle speculation. Hofmann's best-known work is abstract, with great slabs of paint or simple shapes and lines that seldom represent anything directly, and the finest of these paintings are charged with intense emotion that is difficult to describe. Hofmann was clearly aware of the expressivity in his abstract art, giving his paintings evocative titles that demonstrate a poetic sensibility I found as irresistible as the images themselves. As much as I responded to Hofmann's visual art when composing Capriccio, I also responded to these titles; I began to think of them as verbal frames to my musical canvas.

Capriccio is in three movements, borrowing their titles from Hofmann's paintings. The first movement, Lonely Journey, begins as a ponderous funeral march and is transformed as it traverses an imagined landscape. The second movement, Pénombres du soir (Evening Twilight), is, like Hofmann's painting, all about transitions between states. It begins with a shimmering, fragile texture and a sort of grotesque aria before transitioning into a scherzo – a flight of fancy that could have arisen in the space between waking and sleeping, between light and darkness. The final movement, Bacchanale–Phantasmagoria, takes its title from two paintings. The Bacchanale is a scene of wild revelry, loosely drawn from Balkan dance music. The music gets wilder and wilder leading to the brief Phantasmagoria that concludes the piece; in the final moments the music becomes a fever dream of all the images in the piece, finally collapsing in ecstatic exhaustion.

Composer: Michael Ippolito (1985-)

Instrumentation: Cello

Work: Suite for Solo Cello (2020)

Binding:

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Composer: Michael Ippolito (1985-)

Format: Full Score

Instrumentation: Violin, Orchestra

Work: Violin Concerto (2021)

Binding: Spiral Bound

Size: 11.0 x 16.9 inches

Pages: None

Description

There is something about a concerto, perhaps especially a violin concerto, that suggests a heroic narrative. The soloist is the protagonist of an imagined story, collaborating with or battling against the orchestra. As listeners, we identify with the individual persona at the center of the work, and follow their storyline with interest, delighting in their virtuosity and their ability to counterbalance or even overcome a massive orchestra through sheer force of will. When I began to think about writing my own concerto for violin, I was also thinking about ancient Greek epics and mythology, in particular Emily Wilson's brilliant new translation of The Odyssey and Madeline Miller's novels Song of Achilles and Circe. Miller's novels are especially fascinating as they reimagine the well-known stories by focusing on secondary characters (Patroclus and Circe, respectively), rather than the typical hero (Achilles and Odysseus). Somehow, my immersion in Greek mythology, and thinking about heroic stories in general, made me see a potential path for my concerto: to simultaneously embrace epic storytelling, while also undermining it.

My concerto is in two parts. The first, titled Rhapsodos (Song-stitcher), is an epic told from the personal, hero- centered point of view. in ancient Greece, a reciter of epic poetry was called a rhapsode, the roots of the word literally meaning to "stitch together songs". in this movement, the solo violin is the storyteller who embodies the hero, enchanting us with their triumphs and tragedies. The second movement, titled Moirai (Spin-Measure-Cut), refers to the fates, the three sister goddesses who determine the destinies of all mortals. in contrast to the heroic narrative, the Moirai would have a detached and impersonal attitude to any epic story; to them, there is no such thing as a triumph or tragedy, there is simply what is. The three sister's names were often given as Clotho (the one who spins the thread of life), Lachesis (the one who measures each person's allotment), and Atropos (literally the "unturnable" – the one who cuts the thread at the end of life). in this movement, the solo violin begins with Clotho's music, evocative of spinning thread. The music of Lachesis is represented first with a passacaglia, a strict form, or way of measuring time. The spinning music returns before a massive fugue brings together all the themes from the concerto, another strict form that "measures" the protagonist's life. in the final moments, the soloist attempts to defy fate, before the final snip of Atropos' scissors. "Comes the blind Fury with th' abhorred shears, / and slits the thin- spun life."

Composer: Michael Ippolito (1985-)

Instrumentation: Piano, Low Voice

Work: The Long Year (2022)

Binding:

Work Language: English

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

The Long Year is a set of seven songs to poetry by Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950). On the surface, this set is simply a collection of seasonal nature poems, arranged according to a calendar year (starting with winter, moving through spring, summer and fall, and ending with winter). But beneath the surface, something seems to be wrong with the state of nature in these poems, or humanity's relationship to the natural world. While Millay wrote these words in the first part of the twentieth century, I couldn't help reading our current climate collapse into these texts. Through that lens, these songs express my own longing for a return to a right relationship with the landscape, and other living beings, and with the weather and the progression of the seasons, but also my awareness that this relationship is irretrievably lost. The Long Year resides in this state of longing for something you know is gone forever.

Composer: Michael Ippolito (1985-)

Instrumentation: Piano

Work: distanza della luna (The distance of the moon) (2015)

Binding:

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

Le cosmicomiche (Cosmicomics) is set of musical responses Italo Calvino's collection of stories by the same name. It is a compelling exploration of how a musical "diversion" can ultimately transcend its own lightness to reach a point of unexpected profundity.

Composer: Michael Ippolito (1985-)

Format: Score & Set of Parts

Instrumentation: Cello, Violin

Work: Strange Loops

Binding:

Pages: None

Description

Strange Loops transforms the mathematical paradoxes of Douglas Hofstadter and the impossible geometries of M.C. Though Crane is better known for his short stories, his
journalism, and his novels (especially The Red Badge of Courage), Crane's stark free
verse poems (which he called "lines") offer a unique insight into his unconventional
worldview. Indeed, while Crane often seems
unable to fully express himself, or if what he says comes out crudely, I found I admired
his essential truthfulness, his honest quest to understand the world and his place in it.
To me, these poems together formed a compelling, if sometimes bizarre, imaginative
space and I tried to capture that in the musical settings.

Composer: Michael Ippolito (1985-)

Instrumentation: Piano

Work: Folk Songs (2020)

Binding:

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

Born from the isolation of the early pandemic, this deeply personal suite transforms the composer's musical memories into an intimate sonic conversation with the past. What began as private, comforting improvisations on familiar melodies gradually evolved into a set of imaginative variations, ranging from subtle reflections to abstract reinventions. The collection weaves together a Macedonian tune, a Jewish melody learned in Weimar, and a Klezmer waltz, culminating in a fresh transcription of the composer's Cuckoo Variations. Together, these transformed songs offer a poignant tribute to the enduring power of folk music and the human connections it preserves across time and distance.

Composer: Michael Ippolito (1985-)

Format: Score & Set of Parts

Instrumentation: String Quartet (Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello)

Work: String Quartet No. 4 (2016)

Binding:

Size: 12.0 x 8.9 inches

Pages: None

Description

Composed in 2016 and premiered by the Altius Quartet, String Quartet No. 4 unfolds as a compact, continuous seventeen-minute journey through nervous energy and shifting textures. The work opens with a swirl of restless, intersecting ideas before transitioning into a haunting middle section characterized by shimmering tremolos and an ethereal melody played in the cello's high natural harmonics. A ferocious fugue drives the final movement to a dramatic breaking point, eventually collapsing into a brief, intricate coda where fragments from throughout the piece fold back in on themselves for a tightly unified conclusion.

Composer: Michael Ippolito (1985-)

Format: Score & Set of Parts

Instrumentation: String Quartet (Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello), Shamisen

Work: Sekai no hazama (2023)

Binding:

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

Premiered in 2024 by the ensemble Interwoven and shamisen soloist Yoko Reikano Kimura, the 22-minute Sekai no hazama (Between worlds) unites a traditional Japanese instrument with a Western string quartet to explore the complex dynamics of cultural exchange. The three-movement work draws inspiration from 19th-century ukiyo-e woodblock prints by Hokusai, Hiroshige, and Kyosai, using their visual narratives to navigate the friction and harmony between distinct artistic lineages. Traveling from the quartet's fragmented attempts to musically "understand" the shamisen to a wild, unified finale inspired by a grotesque skeleton dance, the composition pushes both classical strings and traditional Japanese techniques into thrilling new territory.

Composer: Michael Ippolito (1985-)

Instrumentation: Piano, Horn

Work: Sonata for Horn & Piano (2024)

Binding:

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

Premiering at the 2025 International Horn Symposium, the fifteen-minute Horn Sonata is built upon the fascinating, sigh-like acoustic phenomenon of hand-stopping the instrument's bell. Unfolding as a single, continuous movement, the work traces an intense emotional arc that travels from a dark funeral march into a hopeful, lyrical section illuminated by natural overtones. A relentless and sinister scherzo ultimately drives the piece toward a thunderous climax before collapsing into a tragic coda, delivering a profound final cri de cœur.
