2021. I had been a tremendous fan of Limón's poetry for years before that, so as we lobbed poetry back and forth, I included a handful of her poems—and this one stuck with all of us the most. The poem relies on a simple, heartfelt image: the poet describing how love came to them suddenly, like a newborn horse that, shortly after its arrival, is already up and moving full speed, "a four-legged beast hellbent on walking." "What was between us wasn't a fragile thing to be coddled, cooed over," writes Limón. "It came out fully formed, ready to run."

Composer: Griffin Candey (1988-)

Instrumentation: Piano, Alto Saxophone

Work: Bird in Ink (2024)

Binding:

Size: 9.1 x 12.0 inches

Pages: 38

Description

Bird in Ink (2024) was commissioned by saxophonist Zhao Shilong to embody birds via the guiding principles of Chinese ink paintings. happened before we were alive? The question, posed during the commission process, immediately brought to mind the concept of generational curses—specifically, breaking generational curses.

That language—"breaking curses"—summons up violent, physical imagery, a hammer blow to break the chains, to rid us of generational loose ends. It imagines our forebears as the antagonists and us as the protagonists, neatly delineating consequence and blame. in reality, intergenerational trauma often defies these neat definitions: some wounds are intentional, some not—some people had choices, some didn't—sometimes, someone's harmful actions grew from the broken circumstances they themselves inherited. in many cases, blame is warranted, but we only reach that space once we soften to a difficult reality: sometimes, those who caused the harm we inherit were simply people trying (if sometimes failing) to do their best. There is a conflict of messaging: when facing pain or tragedy, we are often told that things change quickly—but when repairing, when rebuilding, when addressing systems, we are told that change must be slow, incremental.
