The composition has four movements and became popular in particular on account of the slow movement Clair de lune, which seems to evoke the atmosphere of a moonlit night with its particular aura. Although the music addresses childish fantasy, at the least a talented amateur is required to perform it. The well-known sixth piece, Golliwogg's Cakewalk, is in ragtime style and shows Debussy's easy-going approach to popular trends in music. Henle Publishers launched its series of piano works by Debussy with these Arabesques, the most important of his early piano pieces. The edition is still amongst their most successful ones. The Arabesques were probably composed shortly before they was issued in November 1891. Following the work's publication, it received little attention, but after 1906 it became one of the composer's most popular works and now there are numerous transcriptions for other instruments. He struggled with the finale in particular, and was only able to send the work to the publisher Durand in April 1917. By the time of the suites publication nearly 15 years had transpired and the originally three-movement suite had evolved into one with four-movements with different titles and the work was issued by a publisher to whom Debussy had difficult relations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe extant 1st proofs to the first edition, corrected by Debussy, clearly show his excision of dozens of bars as well as revealing numerous textural alterations. in 1909 at the earliest, Fromont re-engraved the suite and added many accidentals - in particular in the Passepied - thus altering the harmony.
