Though each piece is aimed at a different technical level (I. Elementary, II. Advanced, III. Intermediate), they have a common artistic aim: to connect musical expression with poetic inspiration. in particular, these pieces meditate on the emotional connection between our interior life and the vast and varied landscapes of the natural world all around us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile composing I found myself re-reading Kathleen Raine (one of my favorite poets) and was struck by her statement (in the foreword to her \"Selected Poems\"): \"‘Nature-poetry' is not what we write about nature, but rather the language of images in which nature daily speaks to us of the timeless, age-old mystery in which we participate. Nature communicates today what it told the earliest of humankind, and what it will tell future generations when our modern high-rise cities are no more. Meanings, moods, the whole scale of our inner experience, finds in nature the ‘correspondences' through which we may know our boundless selves. Nature is the common, universal language, understood by all.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat she says about nature resonates with my understanding of music, which also sometimes affords us an opportunity to know ‘our boundless selves'. and I am especially interested in the way that sounds – which, as vibrations in the air, are another aspect of nature – can reveal and heighten our sense of connectedness to ourselves and our surroundings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach movement is inspired by a single stanza from the poem \"Amo Ergo Sum\" by Kathleen Raine, and I would encourage anyone playing these pieces to devote time to internalising the words as well as the music, for they may contain the key to an accurate expression. The actual distance between the stars is almost incomprehensible, yet from our faraway earth-bound perspective they appear in close clusters and constellations. The mysterious relationship between proximity and perspective – millions of light years seemingly within the span of a hand! This might induce anxiety, or awe, yet equally the stars offer a comforting sense of constancy (even if they do sometimes explode into supernovae and change the structure of the sky).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe music connects to these thoughts through the mediating filter of Rilke's poem of the same name, number XX of the Second Part of his \u003cem\u003eSonnets to Orpheus\u003c\/em\u003e , which I read translated in the Norton edition. Rilke humanises the cosmic expanse by analogy, comparing it initially to the distance between two children, and then the ‘many spans merely from a maid to a man, when she avoids him and has him in mind.' in so doing he magnifies the sense of scale inherent in human feelings and relationships, drawing our attention to the solitude of emotional distance. Physical space might be vast, but emotional space seems vaster…\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese twin notions of \u003cem\u003edistance\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003erelationship\u003c\/em\u003e are key to understanding the musical world of \u003cem\u003eZwischen den Sternen.\u003c\/em\u003e The most direct analogy is in the evolving spatial distribution of the musicians. with each spatial reconfiguration, the players form new musical relationships which unambiguously serve to define the sound and form of the piece. But there is also a sense of space in the harmony, especially in the opening dyads: empty yet full of feeling, with a melancholy twist that comes from the spectral re-tuning of six notes of the piano to partials 7, 11, 13, 14, 21 and 23 of a C-spectrum.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis re-tuning is matched by the string trio who double on scordatura instruments: violin with four G-strings, viola with 2 G- and 2 C-strings, cello with four A-strings. Rather than existing in opposition, the violin and piano are conceived as interlocking facets of the same identity, the shifting balance of their energies forming the musical drama of this piece. of course, their differences as instruments could hardly be greater – one so small the other so grand, not to mention playing techniques and sound qualities. It is through their varied interactions, and their aspiration to unity, that the music flows through many states of being towards integration and repose. Despite the changes of character and energy that we experience, the musical materials remain of the same substance, and at the harmonic level at least there is underlying unity across the work, with hints of modality and tonality emerging gradually from the midst of the initial chromaticism.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePoetically speaking, there is an evolution from a visceral, electrified 'thunderous night' into a calm, contemplative 'place of light'. Their uniquely intense vocal timbre, their harmony, which seemed pure and rough at once, and the sense that this music was, at root, not so much about performance as simply being together in the world, in a community of spirit. At the time, I had no intention of using this music to my own creative ends, but now, here we are: \u003cem\u003eSardinian Songbook\u003c\/em\u003e is the second in a cycle of works for the Ligeti Quartet, all based on transcriptions of music from different throat-singing traditions. Like string quartets, the \u003cem\u003etenores\u003c\/em\u003e usually sing in groups of four voices, but being free from instruments they stand very close together enabling the resonances of their voices to blend and interact in a special way. The ritual of performance is not only about the music being played, more fundamentally it is an excuse to spend time together in this special state of awareness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDuring this ‘performance installation' listeners wander freely through the spaces of the gallery, whereas performers conform to a more formalised ritual of spatial-relationships which transform across the duration of the piece. This freedom of movement allows you to bring your attention to the sounds in unpredictable ways: maybe you want to focus for a while on the special sound of the accordion… then baritone or cello… bass clarinet or soprano… the interaction between voices and violins… and later, maybe, a more global balanced view of the whole. The possibility to vary our proximity to the sound sources – to listen closely, or at a distance – is the essence of Invisible Threads.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCohering this spatial sound-ritual is a remarkable ‘polyphonic' text composed by Paul Griffiths, who describes it thus:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"The text is a web of words, kind of subterranean, in that meaning is largely hidden as one word flows into another by connections of sound rather than syntax. Everything flows from the word \"mycelium\", and especially from its three consonantal sounds, all of which can be extended. As in actual mycelium, there are multitudinous branchings out and back in, as well as meaningful phrases emerging here and there, like fruiting bodies. These often include new consonants: \"t\", \"r\" and \"n\", for example, in \"illuminates a measureless solemnity\". The generative word \"mycelium\", however, is hardly used, and at no time does the text refer to the subject matter. The text preserves thereby an ignorance.\" (Paul Griffiths)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe starting point for all of this was thinking about the mysterious world of fungi and mycelium, and the way in which their branching roots intertwine with tree roots to form immense, though unseen, communicative networks beneath the surface of the earth.
